Indian Child Welfare Awareness Day
January 26, 2010
When and Where?
Tuesday, January 26th, 2010 from 10am to 3pm in Olympia, WA. Meet at 10am in room B12 of the John L. O’Brien Building (across from Legislative Building).
What is Indian Child Welfare Awareness Day (ICWA Day)?
ICWA Day is an event hosted by advocates of Native American children. It is a day when you have an opportunity to meet with your Senator and Representatives and to educate them about the importance of enacting laws that help to ensure that Native American foster children live in environments that supports their Native American identities.
Why Should I Attend?
This is your opportunity to influence the public policy decisions that will protect the cultural birthrights of our Native American children. It also provides you the opportunity to meet your legislators and to build a relationship with them and their staff.
What Are the Other Benefits to Attending?
You will be supported throughout the day. We will provide you with all the tools you need to have a successful ICW Awareness Day experience and we are there to make you feel comfortable and confident. We will train you in how to be a successful advocate and we’ll provide you an overview of the legislative process. Breakfast, a light lunch and Native American cultural entertainment will be provided.
How Do I Participate?
Find your elected officials
Please contact your elected officials and schedule your lobby day meetings beginning January 11, 2010.
- The Washington State Legislature
- Washington State House of Representatives by Name
- Washington State Senate by Name
Once you have scheduled your appointments, please send the information to Natalie. It is crucial information for our planning purposes.
What Should I Bring With Me?
- Comfortable shoes
- Anything Native American that you find appropriate (especially if you can wear it or accessorize with it).
- Quarters for parking meters
Parking is limited. If you do want to park by the campus, you may want to look for parking off Capitol Way above the campus in the residential areas. You may have to walk a block or two, but you shouldn’t have to keep feeding quarters to the meters! If you want to secure a guest parking spot you need to arrive as early as possible!
