Lessons of Indigenous Foods

Project Description

The Lessons of Indigenous Foods and the Environment [L.I.F.E] Project highlights the relationship between environmental health, food, and its impact on our health and wellness.  Through the L.I.F.E. Project, NYEP will provide a series of workshops focused on nutrition and traditional ways to harvest, prepare, and share indigenous foods.

Background

In early fall of 2010, the NYEP team hosted a community dinner to honor the students' hard work and dedication to the Program. Now, it's time for them to take the lead

The L.I.F.E Project will allow students to:

  • Create a menu of indigenous foods and
  • Research the cultural and environmental importance
  • Plan a community dinner featuring their menu
  • Share their knowledge of the foods with their community

By hosting the community dinner, students will honor their elders and showcase their knowledge of traditional foods.

Our hope is that as students rediscover the importance of indigenous foods, they will be empowered to educate both native communities and the general public.

NYEP funded by a grant from the National Institutes for Health - Grant # 1 RC1M0004387-01
